In the year in which we celebrate SIPO’s 35th anniversary, we highlight the importance of museums that preserve heritage that is passed on to future generations.
International Museum Day was first celebrated 40 years ago, and an increasing number of museums around the world are participating in this event. Last year, more than 37,000 museums in 158 countries participated.
This year’s theme highlights the potential of museums to act as bridges across cultural, social and geopolitical divides, fostering dialogue, understanding, inclusion and peace within and between communities around the world.
In this context, the digitisation of museum holdings is becoming a key tool for accessibility and connectivity, and intellectual property ensures that these holdings are used responsibly and legally.
Intellectual property enables museum holdings to live in a modern digital environment, while preserving its value, authenticity and integrity. Museums, supported by an intellectual property system, remain meeting places for culture, knowledge, technology and innovation.
