World Environment Day was established in 1972 at the United Nations Conference in Stockholm and is celebrated every year on June 5, with the aim of raising public awareness of the importance of environmental protection.
In the year in which we celebrate SIPO's 35th anniversary, we emphasize the importance of intellectual property protection to encourage innovation in the field of green technologies, which include the development and application of innovative tools, products and systems designed to conserve natural resources, minimize the negative impacts of human activity on the environment and promote sustainability.
Green innovations for environmental protection include the following groups of technologies, inventions and innovations: Air and water purification (e.g. urban photobioreactors filled with algae, which provide the air purification capacity of 200 square meters of lawns or large trees, technologies that use moisture-driven membranes to remove CO2 from the air, innovative biological processes that convert sewage waste into fertilizer and clean water); Waste management and circular economy (e.g. robotic systems that use artificial intelligence for fast and accurate identification and sorting of waste, increasing recycling rates, bacterial degradation techniques, new materials aimed at replacing conventional plastics, production techniques that use only necessary materials, minimizing raw material waste - 3D printing); Energy and carbon reduction (e.g. liquid metal batteries, green hydrogen - generating hydrogen fuel directly from sunlight and air, converting CO2 captured from the air into ethanol or chemical building blocks; Sustainable agriculture and ecosystem restoration (e.g. vertical farming that significantly reduces land and water consumption, agricultural land restoration technology for biodiversity, specifically targeting pollinators); Urban and industrial solutions (e.g. green technology in manufacturing that replaces traditional, highly polluting methods with cleaner technology, development of low-carbon, energy-efficient so-called self-sufficient buildings, afforestation initiatives that apply video game design elements to encourage mass tree planting so-called gamification).
You can find more information about inventions, innovations and initiatives in the field of green technologies on the websites of the European Patent Office and the World Intellectual Property Organization.
